It's not just our photographers that are helping to capture the world through photography, there are thousands of people working hard behind the scenes across the world to bring these images to you.

In this 'Who We Are' series, we look at the many job roles at a photography agency from picture editors, to sales and marketing to art directors.

In our second installment, we get familiar with one of our UK Entertainment team members, Assignment Editor Vicky Dearman. 

What does your job involve? 
Producing the best entertainment coverage we can for our customers.  This involves PR liaison, coordinating diaries and ensuring our pool of freelance photographers are of the best standard. 

We often work onsite at events to ensure a smooth workflow – ensuring the client/PR has everything they need from us,  directing the photographers to make sure we’re capturing everything that we need, supporting our field editors and generally overseeing our coverage of the event. 

To ensure we’re delivering what our customers need we must also keep up to speed on what they are using so monitoring publications is also a large part of our role.  We also need to think of new ways to give our customers value from our product, this means being ahead of the curve and offering up the latest technologies, styles and ideas.  Every day can be very different!

What skills do you need?
I consider the key skill to be organization. When you're coordinating diaries you can't relax for a moment or you end up missing a job or sending a photographer to the wrong place at the wrong time for the wrong reason! 

How did you get where you are today?
A mixture of luck, hard work and contacts. I started out as an office junior at Frank Spooner Pictures back in 1997. I filed, made tea and did the Friday beer run. I was quickly promoted to researcher and have steadily progressed from there, carrying out a variety of roles at a variety of agencies. I've been an editor, a sales person, picture editor of Hello Middle East, second in command at a UK start up...most of those roles came to me after I was recommended by a previous colleague.  I tend to make friends wherever I go and that has been a huge part of my progression in the industry.

What gets you out of bed in the morning? 
Coffee.  I am not a morning person!

What was the best piece of advice you’ve been given? 
An oldie but a goodie:  “It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.” 

What is your ambition? 
The best part of my job is being onsite at events.  That's when you really see everyone come together as a team and this gives me such a buzz.  I'm still learning the ropes when it comes to onsite management but that's definitely what I'm aiming for - to manage our teams at major events such as Cannes Film Festival.

What is your philosophy towards work/work ethic? 
I always strive to do the best job I can of everything I am tasked with.  I also believe that there needs to be an aspect of fun to keep the hard work enjoyable.   If you can laugh with the team you work with in the busiest, most stressful of times then you can get through the other side, having achieved a job well done with a little sanity still remaining.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? 
Last year I managed our coverage of the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands.  This was my first major event on my own and it was a success.  The pride I felt when bosses and colleagues congratulated me on a job well done was incomparable to anything before. 

It wasn't a glamorous affair however, I was in Dam Square by 6am to make sure I was at the front so that I could access our photographer to get his cards should the technology fail which it did when the worlds media were all trying to get a signal from the same spot. There were around half a million people on their smart phones!

What legacy would you like to leave behind you? 
When someone leaves Getty Images they always say they will miss the people. The people make the place. The passion, pride and drive of Getty employees is a cut above that of anywhere else I've worked. This is in large part down to a sense of camaraderie, a drive to be the best and to achieve this together.  I would hope that people would say that I am one of those employees that make a positive difference to their working day.

There is something very serene about it.  I also like the regiment of it...all in a row in the same position. I’m always looking for organisation…even in creativity!
