Jamie started as a celebrity photographer for his uncle Patrick McMullan in 1995 at the age of 21. He quickly acquired a large stable of clients, spanning music, fashion, celebrity and nightlife industries. Because of personal relationships with celebrities, he became one of the most sought after photographers in New York City, with work published in New York Times,Time, Newsweek, New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, The New York Post, The New York Daily News, Interview Magazine, Details Magazine, and more. After six years, McCarthy became president of Patrick McMullan Company, where he managed a staff of ten photographers and continued to shoot A-list events in New York City and Los Angeles. He joined WireImage in early 2004, expanding his client base, with private events and shoots all over the globe. After the 2008 merger with Gettyimages, McCarthy's work doubled, with his shots appearing on both sites. He began shooting exclusive portraits, which have run as covers for People Magazine, Us Magazine and others.

McCarthy has been profiled in The New York Times, New York Post, Details Magazine, Playboy and was named one of the "Thirty Under 35" by Gotham Magazine. He's been featured in The Tents, a docutmentary about New York's Fashion Week.
