“This photo from the Women’s Snowboard Giant Slalom combines a few elements that make it really pop. The bright colors of the snowboarder are a strong contrast to the fresh layer of snow that fell overnight.

The longer shutter speed gives a better feel for the high speed at which Alena Zavarzina is traveling down the course and the lens flare from the sun backlighting adds to the artistic drama.

Another element that’s difficult to plan for is the sun’s star-shaped reflection off the top of her helmet which quickly draws your eye straight to the subject.”
