Sochi 2014 Getty Images Photo of the Day - February 14th

Sweden's Henrik Lundqvist #30 makes a sprawling save against Switzerland's Nino Niederreiter #22 in the first period of a Group C matchup on Day 7 of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics at Bolshoy Ice Dome on February 14, 2014 (Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

“What strikes me about this photo is what we all love about hockey," said Getty Images photographer Bruce Bennett. "The hard hits, sliding across the ice, everyone battling to get control of the puck, and goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist with his arms and legs spread out to continue to protect the goal. In this game he shut out the Swiss, and it’s hard-charging play like this that made it possible."

Bennett captured this shot using one of the remote cameras he installed in the rafters at the start of the Olympics. The shots from the remote cameras are immediatelty transmitted to the Getty Images editors at at the Main Press Center. As Bennett went on to explain, "The overhead angle is very unique and gives an interesting perspective on how close all the players are to each other and how big the goal Lundqvist has to defend really is.”

Editor's note: New York-based Getty Images Photographer Bruce Bennett has recorded the history of the sport of ice hockey in still imagery for the past 38 years. He has photographed almost 5,000 NHL and international hockey games and is in Sochi photographing his fourth Olympic games.
