Sochi, Russia – February 16, 2014: Thomas Mermillod Blondin of France flies off a jump in the Men's Alpine Super-G on Day 9 of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics at Rosa Khutor Alpine Center. (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images)
“This photo captured during the Men’s Super-G is a classic alpine skiing image,” said Getty Images photographer Clive Rose. “The long lens compresses the background of trees and draws your eye straight to Blondin.”
There had been some criticism the previous day during the Women’s Super-G about the course being difficult to attack due to tricky and inconsistent conditions. Those who had success in the event were seemingly able to find the right balance between aggressive and strategic skiing. “These skiers flirt so closely with the edge of control—one bad move or missed landing and their Olympic hopes are over,” continued Rose. “With Blondin’s poles out to his sides and both skis off the ground, you instantly get the sensation of just how fast these skiers race.”
Editor’s note: Thomas Mermillod Blondin finished in 15th place in the Men’s Super-G with a time of 1:19.53
