Trench warfare has become the defining symbol of World War 1 and while the armies were locked in stalemate, soldiers endured the harshest of conditions.

2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, leading within days to further declarations amongst the major European powers. So began a conflict that would claim over 16 million lives and set the global agenda for the 20th century.

This series featuring stills and video found in the Hulton Archive will reflect on the impact both at home and in the field.
