Getty Images is delighted to welcome the Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) as the latest addition to our roster of archive contributors.
Located in Rochester, New York, Visual Studies Workshop’s mission is to support makers and interpreters of images through education, publications, exhibitions, and collections. Founded in 1969 by photographer, writer, curator, and educator Nathan Lyons, it is an independent, artist-run, educational and support center for photography and media arts.
For over 40 years, VSW has been home to hundreds of exhibitions, a significant repository for artists’ books and titles, and publisher of the bi-monthly magazine Afterimage.
Among its rich collections is the Soibelman News Agency archive. Based in New York City, it is an extensive and diverse collection of more than 40,000 news agency photographs from the interwar period. The collection ranges from the momentous to the seemingly trivial, from aerial views of Yugoslavia, to the Spanish Civil War, Nazi Germany, aviation, the construction of roads, dams and bridges, mining disasters, pipe cleaner art, royalty, jai alai, as well as a great many men and women nearly forgotten almost a century later.
