Gisela on the red carpet/Property of Gisela Schober

Where did your interest in photography come from?
I got my first camera when I was just nine years old and from that point on I was always ‘The Photographer” in our family.

What was your first camera?
It was a Kodak. My first professional was a Canon EOS1.

What was your big break?
My first published pictures of Boris Becker at a party in Munich appeared in newspaper Abendzeitung. I was really happy and this motivated me to keep going. Covering The Cannes Festival in 1998 was also very important for me because there I met the head of the first photo agency I worked with.

What are you inspired by?
Early in my career, I had an apprenticeship in top hotel Bayerischer Hof and I was always coming in contact with big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franz Beckenbauer and so on. At first, I liked the glitz and glamour of this world. Now, I want to take photos where the stars look good so they appreciate the pictures I took of them.

What piece of kit can you not live without?
My 50 mm lens.

Whose career do you most admire?
I admire Johnny Depp’s career. He went from a nobody to a super star down to good luck.

Describe your photographic style.
Because I capture social events, it can be difficult to create a distinct style. I do admire Edgar Herbst who did create his own style. I just try to take good pictures that capture situations and emotions.

Why is photography important?
Sometimes photos show more than the eyes can see - little moments of emotions that you wouldn`t recognize in reality.
