For years fashion has influenced films and films have clearly influenced fashion. The relationship between the fashion houses, the stylists and the film studios has always been strong.

Back in the day, legendary stylist Edith Head was one of the first to guide the look of films. In particular, she played an important role in many of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies. Edith ensured the costumes in these movies always reflected the latest trends as they hit the cinema screens.

Innovation and adaptation in costume design has always been key to the overall look of a film.

Here are some of the most famous examples of where movies have had the biggest influence on fashion which continues even today:

Saturday Night Fever (1977)
This movie framed the 1970’s with its use of wide lapels, double breasted white suits, vivid coloured dresses which reflected the visually exciting disco scene.

Annie Hall (1977)
The Woody Allen classic gave birth to masculine tailoring on a feminine body.
The white shirt and slacks became a staple of many women’s wardrobes. Ralph Lauren continually pays homage to this movie today.

Barbarella (1968)
Barbarella showcased the innovative designs of Paco Rabanne, with his chain linked dresses. The futurism movement of the swinging 60’s is perfectly represented in the psychedelic film.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
This movie gave us an iconic look - the silhouetted black dress with drop pearls and dark glasses with a wide brimmed hat. What woman hasn’t pictured that image when planning the perfect red carpet evening look?

Desperately Seeking Susan (1985)
This film captured the expressive energy of youth culture in the 1980’s with fun costume jewellery and women playing dress up.

Vertigo (1958)
Vertigo took style influence from the early 1950’s and created a movie star overnight from model Kim Novak. This look has been copied many times in the exact way – hair, heels high and skirt low.

The Great Gatsby (2013)
This movie highlights the opulence and decadence of the upper classes in the 1920’s and the popularity of the flapper style dresses.  The flapper was not only a dress, but also a new breed of woman that wore it. She had a bob hairstyle, smoked, partied all night, was rather opinionated and had a cavalier approach to sex.

The ever evolving inspirational relationship between film and fashion, is one well worth paying close attention to.
