A new season heralds a host of new hair and make-up looks and summer is guaranteed to bring out the brights. Dreamt up on the catwalk and pioneered on the red carpet, check out the headliners in beauty this summer.

This season’s waves aren’t fussy affairs so there’s no need to heat up the rollers. Low maintenance, beachy barnets were all over the catwalks for SS14. At Anna Sui, models sauntered down the runway like a throng of mermaids, Bluemarine had them soft and subtle and at Diane Von Furstenberg it was waterfall waves a plenty.
Jessica Alba’s been quick to cotton on and team her cascading locks with an electric blue gown. The look’s ethereal but entirely achievable by plaiting damp hair and sleeping on it or the brave will be dusting off their crimpers (but keeping them on a super low setting). Either way, surf is most definitely up.
Who’d have thought that florals could ever be a high fashion look? A move on from the festival flower garlands of 2013, this summer’s florals are delicate. Never more so than at Zac Posen where petals individually nested throughout the hair for a 360-degree detail and Dolce & Gabbana wound blossoms in and out of Baroque buns.
Emma Watson showed us how to take a trend and give it an edgy twist when she rocked up at the 2014 Oscars, switching buds for studs. She clipped tiny metallic and gem stars in her messy up do adding interest from all angles. A bit more grown up but oh so pretty.
Left down, braids can be girly and a bit school uniform but wrapped around the head, braids can be super chic. The impeccably pinned Heidi plaits at Naeem Khan are not only one of the summer’s biggest hair trends, they’re also the ultimate holiday hair. Plaited and ends tucked away so there’s no danger of frizz is a surefire way to get incredible sun-kissed highlights.
Ali Larter took note and opted for a softer look with a few loose tendrils and the perfect pink lipstick to finish the look off.
Maybe we’ve just watched Amy Adams in American Hustle too many times but disco curls seem like a look to have fun with and the clouds of curls seemed to have their own rhythm as they bounced down the SS14 catwalks.
To stop this look side-stepping into fancy dress category, Reese Witherspoon followed the look at the Holly Fulton show by pinning the mounds of curls over to one side, resting it on one shoulder. Reese played it down a little with brushed out, smooth curls rather than full-on fluff. Disco ball optional.
Hurrah! After season upon season of natural lashes, the long-neglected mascara is back with a vengeance. Lashes at Carolina Herrera were thick, black and way too spiky to be doll-like, showing that sometimes it’s okay for eyes to steal the show.
Hats off to Pixie Lott who applies lashings of lashes and totally pulls it off.  Take note, if taking this look poolside, best switch to the waterproof variety.
Black might be the mainstream choice but white eyeliner dominated the SS14 catwalks. From graphic flicks to Tipp-Ex blocks covering the eyelid, it was a white out.
Not the easiest to replicate, Emilia Clarke plays it on the safe side with a subtle cloudy wash around the inner corners of her eyes that makes her look wide awake and fresh as a daisy.
You can’t escape it, orange is the lip colour for SS14 and it’s not for wallflowers. Day-glow, neon, call it what you will but bright is the only tone that qualifies.
With a fierce attitude all of its own, the models in the Nanette Lepore show pouted their way down the catwalk whilst Camilla Belle teamed it with polished skin to look immaculate. Like red’s cooler younger sibling, a citrus shade is far more easygoing and works on every skin tone.
This season sees the return of blue in all its forms. Whether it be a pastel baby blue powder taken right up to the brow like at Badgley Mischka or the nineties style finelined turquoise at Marc Jacobs sitting inside the waterline, blue is big news all round.
But beating the fash pack hands down was Lupita Nyong’o’s bold cerulean eyeliner that matched her dress exactly. And who would be brave enough to team it with a full on red lip? Only she.
Believe it or not, applying bronzer is quite the art form. Achieving the ultimate faux glow demands contoured cheekbones and tawny temples, not merely an all-over dusting. Michael Kors is a self-confessed tan-oholic so it’s no wonder he enlists top make-up artist Dick Page every season to create a sun-kissed glow on his girls. This summer is no exception and bronzed skin is the base to every look.
Not convinced? There are few that can trump Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in the contouring stakes. Leaving the central section of her face bare, she bronzes in the shape of a ‘3’ from forehead to cheek, to chin, achieving the perfect three dimensional glow.
